Professional Area of Interest
One area of interest is the relationship between parental alienation syndrome and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Parental alienation occurs when one parent deliberately undermines the child’s relationship with the other parent. Research indicates that this form of emotional domestic violence and coercive control can persist for decades, increasing the likelihood of developing various mental health disorders. These disorders can include depression, anxiety, PTSD and other psychosomatic issues that affect both the alienated parent and the children involved.
Studies have shown that parental alienation has a significant impact on the targeted parent, resulting in deep emotional distress, psychological harm and a profound sense of loss and grief. Alienated parents often experience depression, anxiety and PTSD-like symptoms due to the rejection and manipulation they face. This situation is recognised as a form of complex trauma, similar to what individuals experience in other forms of abuse or violence.
Addressing parental alienation requires support that extends beyond legal terminology. It causes significant emotional damage to both the child and the alienated parent, necessitating further research to understand its complexities and long-term effects. Targeted parents experience grief, loss and various mental health challenges, yet the current legal and mental health systems often lack adequate understanding and support. Focusing solely on legal aspects can be re-traumatising and ineffective, as legal battles may further traumatise the child, especially if they are being used as a pawn in the conflict.
Alienated parents require a comprehensive approach that encompasses emotional support, therapeutic intervention and practical guidance. Professional mental health support for these parents includes therapy to help them cope with emotional distress, develop coping strategies for managing alienation and build resilience. Additionally, more research is needed to explore the long-term consequences of parental alienation on targeted parents and how it impacts their relationships with their children, including the potential for future alienation.
