Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses that affect many individuals. In Australia, an estimated 1.1 million people, or 4.5% of the population, are currently living with an eating disorder. Alarmingly, less than one-third of these individuals are receiving treatment or support.

The onset of an eating disorder can be attributed to various complex factors, and no single cause has been identified. However, several known contributing risk factors include:

  • Psychological factors
  • Socio-cultural influences
  • Genetic vulnerability
  • Modifiable Risk Factors:
    • low self-esteem
    • body dissatisfaction
    • thin socio-cultural ideals
    • extreme weight loss behaviours

Common Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are behavioural conditions characterised by severe and persistent disturbance in eating behaviours and associated distressing thoughts and emotions.

Eating disorders often co-occur with other psychiatric disorders most commonly, mood and anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and alcohol and substance use disorders.

An eating disorder can affect one’s physical, psychological and social function. Types of eating disorders include:
  • anorexia nervosa
  • bulimia nervosa
  • binge eating disorder
  • specified feeding and eating disorder
  • avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)
  • pica
  • rumination disorder

Eating disorders treatment

Successful treatment and complete recovery from an eating disorder is possible.

Individuals with eating disorders may experience a range of emotions as they enter the treatment and recovery phase, including stress, anxiety, embarrassment, shame or fear. Some may be in denial about their issue, while others might feel they have their disorder under control, even when that is not the case.

Seeking help as early as possible greatly reduces the severity, duration, and impact of an eating disorder. If you notice any warning signs or symptoms in yourself or someone you care about, it is crucial to seek professional help immediately rather than waiting for the illness to worsen.
